The factory tach in my 70 Chevelle is doing some strange things. It wanders all over the 1-3K range and its very bouncy when I rev it.It fluctuates at around 500-1500 rpms at idle. When I give it gas it takes about 2 or 3 seconds to respond then bounces. The tach does not snap up in rpms like it should. It seems it gets a little better the longer I drive it.Any ideas what the problem can be?Thanks guys

I had a speedometer (electronic - not mechanical) acting similar to that a while back. It turned out to be a defect in the jewel movement (the point on which the needle rotates). It was under warranty at the time, so the dealer replaced it. Other than that, I would look for an intermittent wire connection.

The tach in my 70 did the same thing that you are talking about. It is an Auto Meter Auto Guage. I after it started I changed my alt, regulator, all my ignition, plugs, wires, complete dist. (HEI), I also changed the sterio and went over all my wiring, but nothing helped. About 2 months ago I put a MSD kit for the HEI, 6A box, and Blaster 2 coil, made a jumper wire to plug into the 6A and it is good now, works just like the day I put it on... I have no idea how or why but its ok now

My old tach did the same thing. The ground (to the steering column) wasn't good enough. I took it out to the firewall and the problem went away. connection was a little iffy also.
