I'm talking to a guy about buying a remanufactured motor and he says that the parts used are a combination of TRW, Competion Cams and Enginetech parts. Does anyone have an opinion on these brand names? What type of questions should I be asking him? What is the difference between a remanufactured motor and a rebuilt motor?

yes, ask him to state exactly which parts are made by which manufacturer. then post the list here and we'll trash, I mean, analyze it. :)

TRW got out of the engine parts business about 12 years ago, so if they are using TRW engine parts, then it is old stuff. Enginetech doesn't manufacture any engine parts, they source from different suppliers and package accordingly. For the most part, they use good product although some of their gaskets are somewhat suspect. Comp Cams is a respected manufacturer.

"Remanufactured" has more letters than "rebuilt", therefore it must be better, and should cost more.

Far as I know, there's no legal standard defining the difference between the two words. It has more to do with quality of work than the word used to describe it. I'd rather have a quality, reputable "rebuilt" than a shoddy "remanufactured".
