Hi all
Just wondering if its easier to install a engine with the water pump on or off. 72 Malibu 307 to 350. TIA.

The easiest is with both balancer and pump off. If you leave the balancer on and you have the short pump, then it doesn't make much difference if the pump is on or off. The balancer is what gets in the way the most. If you are ever going to do your own engine work, invest in TWO tools: a balancer puller and an installer.

If you pulled the radiator when you took the old engine out I would put the water pump and balancer on before dropping in the new engine. It's a hell of a lot easier to install this stuff while it's on an engine stand and it makes it easier to make sure all gaskets will seal the right way

I agree with ken, theres plenty of room with the water pump on the engine.
