When installing acrank shaft, how do you set the thrust bearing and why? Someone told me that the 3rd bearing is the thrust bearing. Is he being misleading?

I also tap it back and forth, with a heavy hammer, and block of wood, or a heavy hard rubber mallet. I also rotate the crank, and do it again, as I tighten the cap bolts, this works better with a friend helping. Also I use a large bar, and pry it forward as tighting. Not sure abot SB, but BB chevy, the thurst bearing is the #5. Not all engines are the same, like Olds is # 3. It is easy to tell which one it is by looking, as the thurst bearing, is the one with the side bearing flanges. Doing this centers the bearing.
