I'd have the heads done, installing 2.19/1.88 valves, a good porting and bowl blending job as well. A Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth Intake sounds like a good choice, and a Holley or a Q-Jet on top. I don't want to start a carb debate, so I'll recommend both, since the boys around here seem to like both. For a cam might I suggest Comp Cams XE268H .515/.520 lift and 224/230 duration at .050.

Finish off with a set of headers and mufflers of your choice ( Borla or Dynomax, hint hint ). All this coupled with a good bottom end rebuild, as well as an electronic conversion kit for your points distributor, and you should notice a difference.

Don't forget it's the whole combo that matters.I'd go with one of the previously mentioned intake manifolds, headers,Holley 750 3310 or Q-Jet,and a mild cam www.ultradyne.com They have couple of nice grinds that a basic stock motor would really benefit from.Stock rockers will be fine. And most important, get some gear.Like 3.73's or 4.10's.You'll benefit more from the gear than you would saying spending the money on roller rockers.JMO

Check out this link to a combo that works with bone stock heads. I ran this for 3 years until I built a mild roller motor. Your 4:11 gears and 4 speed put you as a candidate for a bigger cam than I used I would say some more duration say in the 230 to 234 range.

On my 66 360HP with an M20 and 3.55s I made a bunch of changes. Cam, intake, 780 vac.headers the end result was that it ran better stock. It rpmed much better but for a driver it is better stock. Your 4.11s will help but don't get carried away with the mods a 396 doesn't have the torque of a 454 and can't get away with as much.

Mike makes a VERY good point. and just for anyone else thinking of a package like Bad 70's...If your car was an automatic I would not recommend anything over 224 duration for a street or street/strip car with a 396 and Your intended use...However a 454 with 4:11's and an automatic could hold its own with the low 230's duration cam and would benefit from the healthier cam since the car would operate at a higher RPM level.

My motor described in the link, ran out of breath at 5000 RPM..hence the relatively low MPH for a 12.65 run. With the 3.55 gears and 28" tires pulling through the 1320 mark at 4800 RPM a larger cam would have hurt me enough in the first 60 to 100 ft enough to be slower ET wise than the 224 cam but gain 1 or 1 1/2 mph.
