CE stands for Chevrolet Engine. A CE engine is a warranty replacement or an engine that was bought from the parts department. I think the casting number should be 3969854which is a 69-72 396/402. There is no way to tell the HP rating. What is the casting date? Is it a 2 or 4 bolt main block?

CE is a serice engine. Could be anything from complete engine to a fitted block with just pistons. All depends on the extent of the original engine damage needing service.

The code will not tell you anything about the engine. They were stamped with a serial number for indentification and thats all this number is for. Service engines and partials were sold by part numbers.

Most 4 bolt blocks have the extra threaded plug by the oil filter for running the external oil cooler. I'm not sure what size the plugs are but there should be 2 right above the oil filter on the 4 bolt blocks. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Based on this data, looks like there should be another number (year) between CE and the serial number of the engine, 62677.
Hmmm... I'll have to take another look. There was definitely enough space after the E but I didn't see a number. Of course it was at night with a drop light so I'll take a look see today.

Thanks for that info!

I checked, and though there is enough space after the CE, I can not distinguish a number (the engine is in the car presently). Might actually be one there but I can't discern it.

I was "told" it was a '68 motor but we all know what that's worth sometimes

Above the filter there is one small plug that the oil gauge is tied into and another larger (probably 3/4") threaded plug with the plug in it. Does the sensor plug count as one or would there be 2 of the larger ones in a 4-bolt?

Is this an automatic? 4 bolts usually have 3 holes. The most rear hole is 1/2" USS coarse-threaded and is where the stud for the clutch cross shaft screws in, if you have a 3 or 4 spd trans. The center hole is drilled into the oil galley and has a 3/4"pipe thread (for OIL guage). The front hole has a 1/2" pipe thread drilled into the oil galley(For external oil cooler). Sounds like you have a 2 bolt. Based on the casting #, this is not a 68 block, it is a 69-72. Why don't you just open the hood and look down between the back of the hood and the cowl and the casting # and the date code should be easily visiable on the flange of the engine where itth mounts to the bellhousing. No one would ever rely on the pad stamp.
