What were the choices for engines in the SS 396 Chevelles in 66? There seems to be some contradictions in the publications I have. The car I have is a 2 dr. sedan and we were wondering if the 375 horse was an option in these cars or was it just in the El Camino? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There were 3 different SS engine options for a 66. One was the L35 325 horse 396 (standard issue) then the L34 360 horse 396 (which was the most popular engine choice in 66 for an SS car) and finally the L78 375 horse 396. All of these engines were avaiable for the coupe as well as the El-Camino, but the L35 was listed as a standard El-Camino option, meaning (I think) you could have a 396 in your El-Camino without getting the SS package. Hope this helps.

i was fortune enough to buy a l78 ss396 chevelle in 66. like you stated alot of the publications don't show the l78 as being offered and if i'm not mistaken the dealer brochures only reflected a 325hp and 360hp. when i ordered my 66 it was at the end of the production year and i requested a 360hp not knowing they also had 375hp. anyway they found the car i wanted at a dealer in san diego only with the 375hp...lucky me!

RatPowr is correct. If you wanted an SS in '66 your only option (thankfully) was the Mk IV big-block 396. The standard 325HP version (RPO L35 for Custom El Caminos) went into 44,362 Chevelles, 24,811 360HP L34's were sold and 3,099 375HP L78's.

The L35 had 2-bolt mains and the L34 & L78 had 4-bolt mains. The L35 was a $104.56 option, while the L78 came in at $235.26. (Wow--sounds pretty good today!)

In 1966 all SS 396 equipment could've been ordered for the Custom El Camino, but the SS identification was never used.
