I bought this car a little over a year ago. DIdnt really get the impression the guy I bought it from knew what he was doing. He said the 454 came out of a truck, and they put a voodo cam in it. Because it had no interior in it, we didnt drive it much. Well now it has a new interior, and a new 410 possi rear end. We wanted to start driving it. How ever........... It seams to have good power at full throttle. But at cruise at the right RPM it will back fire out the exhaust, but not consistantly.
My brother told me to check the rockers, springs dampeners to see if any thing was broken........nodda. I pulled the plugs and all seamed good but 1. Number 3 looked like it was running ritch. Way ritch. But not oil fouled. The seals look intact from what i can see through the springs.
The compression although not greatly consistant from cylinder to cylinder seams to check out ok.
My brother thinks the cam and lifters are eating them selves.....
I have no idea if they put in new lifters when they suposebly put in this voodoo cam.
So I pulled a few rockers off (the lifters were bleading down when I tried it with the rockers on) and put a dile indicator on the push rods. I got differant readings on all of the ones I checked. 298,312,307,309 and so on. The readings were not consistant. I figured cam tolerances would be tighter than that.
I pulled the oil filter and cut it open.........it had a little metal in it put I would have expected more. (the oil was pretty dirty for a car that supposably didnt get driven much) I had to use a magnet to even pull out enough metal to see it.
My dilema is, put it back together with a new spark plug to see if it was as simple as that!!!!!!
Can you get acurate readings with a dile indicator on the end of a push rod when the only presure on the lifter is the dile indicator itself?
If I have to replace the cam shaft.....so much of the engine and front end of the car have to come apart that, with the incosistancy of the compression, maybe its time for a complete rebuild any way.
I planned on that down the road in 2 or 3 years anyway, but financially not now.
I was thinking of a rebuild to LS6 specs or a crate 502 or something else.
