I recently raided the dumpster at work after they cleaned out the stockroom and trashed all of the old stock stuff, figuring I could either play with it or sell some of it.

How are you guys that are ebay sellers set up? I went to register to sell some things, and they wanted a credit card and a checking account. Do you folks who sell frequently use a separate checking account and CC for your eay stuff? I don't want to give away all of my money, I figure I will lose enough just selling on ebay to start with.

Thanks

I don't have a separate account (or card) for Ebay. You do need to keep track of what you are buying / selling tho. Paypal is a great convenience for both parties. Yeah, they might charge a little, but it is worth it in my mind. Plus, if their is a dispute over something purchased with Paypal, they will help. Some people don't like it, but I do.

K,
Although I have never had any problems, I do have one checking account with a debit card that I use for everything I do online. I keep a small amount in it to cover whatever I need and also have my Pay-Pal payments go to the same account.
As far as selling the stuff, do a lot of looking first. You can get a pretty good idea of what stuff is going for by looking at completed auctions.
Have fun !!!

You're a smart man Bill.
I do exactly the same thing.
This way if by some chance somebody does figure out your passwords or finds a way to get to your account, they won't get much.

In fact I go to the extent of only putting in the account or keeping in the account just what I need to cover my ebay purchases.
Also, I keep 99% of my online purchases to under $200. That's about as high as my "trust level" goes.

It would be inherently safer to have separate accounts, but it is actually unsafe enough to worry about to use the regular one? I just don't want to have to open an account just for the equivalent of a yard sale.

Maybe I should be less paranoid.

Usually your bank will open a free checking account for you at no charge. It is definately safer, though ebay is OK as long as you actually read and pay attention to what you are doing.

I use a separate account for my store, but mostly for accounting purposes.
Checking completed listing is a great tip-do a search for what you are selling, then go on the left side and check the "completed listings" box. You can see what has sold, as well as what did not, and what price. You can also use this to get more info on something you have, though depending on what it is, it can be tedious.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other ebay ???

I have to pay attention as well as all the fees? forget it! ;)

Funny thing is that the items i am selling show up all over the place pricewise. I checked the completed listings, and some didn't sell for hald what some others did.

It is pretty specialized equipment, maybe a bit obsolete, so the market may be thin.

Thanks Bowtie, if I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

The only reason they use your card is to charge the fees for selling. I've done this for several years and have no problem with it. Paypal is the ticket for receiving/sending money as well. Again, there is a fee involved but payment is immediate. I don't care to jack with money orders.

Don't be afraid of ebay or be discouraged by what seems like a lot of hassle - it's a terrific way to monetize what's in your garage for relatively little hassle. I'd say the biggest pain is packing something and getting it shipped. UPS will come to your house and pick the package up. You have no risk as a seller. Buyer pays everything. You'd be surprised what you can sell and for how much. I've bought and sold plenty of stuff for the Camaro/Elky/Chevelle with virtually no bad transactions. I've never been "swindled" out of my money or stuff. My main gripe is people who charge fixed shipping of $5 and they mail it to you in an envelope with 32 cents postage on it.

Me too, separate account at a different bank, so they can't hack thru into my house or business accounts. Set up a paypal account and get it confirmed. Do not ship anything until you get paid and it clears, checks 7-10 business days, MO's can be tracked on line. Do not accept payment for more than bid plus shipping. For items over $20 (my threshold) pay for delivery confirmation. Buyer pays for shipping and insurance. If you are shipping priority you can get the boxes free at the USPS web page. If other types allow for packaging costs and charge accordingly. I get mine for free because we get so much stuff at work. But keep in mind that some folks will not bid if they feel the packaging and handling costs are out of line. give feedback to those that pay quickly without problems. Be prepared for the fact that only 1 out of 3 buyers will leave feedback. At some point something will go wrong, don't risk more than you can afford to lose. If you search here under Ebay you will find more tips. Ebay site has plenty of message board and groups that can help too. Good luck (any 64 parts???).

I got shafted early when ebay first started up and I made a dumb buy from a guy thru but outside of ebay, I also got screwd a month ago but pay pal covered most of it (which was nice) if you check the feedback of the sellers you buy from your in pretty good shape. But without a doubt I have saved probably $10,000 at least in the past 6 years using ebay, so a screw job now an then isnt such a bad thing for me. I just sold a car on ebay and got 3000 people look it over in 5 days!!! where else can yo uget that kind of exsposer. I`m into Cars, bikes,Mame,Golf, autographs, and I buy alot of equipment for my store on ebay too so I`m on ebay everyday, I dont know what I would do without it. I hope they dont start charging tax next year.
