Hello everyone, we're currently working on a 71 Chevelle convertible at our shop. Last week we got a pair of Dynacorn full quarters (ES7349L &ES7349R). One was purchased at Classic Muscle (because we had a credit there)
& the other at NPD.
During the test fit, we ran into some fitment problems (I know you're thinking "no big deal", right?).
The problem area was where the quarter meets the rocker. In the door jamb area the quarter appears to be badly twisted. It looks like it was stamped wrong or something. I was just wondering if anyone has run into this before. NPD said they've never heard of it, and Dynacorn said the same thing. It can be fixed by notching, but it shouldn't have to be. Dealing with aftermarket parts is something we do every day here, but we don't usually see anything this bad. Thoughts?

Ran into this on AMD coupe quarters on both sides, I got them to fit after I heat relieved them while welding them on. A friend just put on golden legion quarters on a resto mod project we're working on they fit like a glove, and the stamping was very crisp and clean.

Good luck, SJ

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the Golden Legion stuff. It's worth a shot.
We can make these work, but what's the point of doing fab work on something that shouldn't need it. If we cut them up & they still don't fit...well, you know the drill.

I am working on a 71 convertible, and I used dynacorn's quarters. I ran into the same thing. I had to relief cut the area and weld in some new metal to get it to fit right on the rocker. Other than that, the quarter panels fit great in all of the other areas, and the body lines look great as well.

Thanks Bart. See, that's what I hate. There's obviously a problem, but Dynacorn doesn't want to admit to it. They'd rather dismiss it as "We've never heard of that" and be done with you. Knowing that, even though I return them for not fitting, they'll sell them to someone else.

Is it just a case of the inside radius (edge covered by interior welting) not stamped tight enough? If you tacked the outer edge to the rocker and forced the radius tighter in the area mentioned, it should draw it back into correct formation. Maybe the dyes weren't bottomed in that area for some reason?? I would try this before any notching and also check the lower aft door radius to compare.

Good Luck!

What did Rick at NPD say? Refund and what about return shipping?

If the rest is acceptable try what SJ says below or switch to G.L.. Heat shrinks metal and applying it while drawing the lower parts together may rectify the problem without cutting. Other quarters in that area are often wrinkled from the repro die process. Good progressive die processes like on original panels produce areas that are wrinkle free or close to it. This is evident in different areas on many panels.

A lot of people say that when they pull new panels from a box, only to find out after hanging them the fit is not that great.

Hi fellas..

Our 70-72 coupe full-quarters are Golden Legion... Problem is, Golden Legion does not LIST a full-quarter for 70-72 convertible.

That's why we have those sourced to Dynacorn. We're going to look at AMD (Tri-Plus actually, we order direct from AMD's source) to see if they're doing a convertible quarter, and I'm eating dinner with Golden Legion this Thursday and maybe I'll prod them..

In any case, to the OP, since you're in Statesville, we shouldn't have a problem getting that quarter back from you and refunding, whether you happen to be coming towards us, or if we have to come get it from you. Either way... We're going to inspect all of our inventory and get with Dynacorn. That said, actually having a REMEDY and inventory back available that doesn't have the issue could take time. If you can make these work, we'd also be open to a reasonable labor-allowance. In any event, please call the Charlotte NPD and ask for Shawn or Jennifer, and they'll take care of you.. I would offer the assistance, but I'm a 1-armed paper hanger right now, and you'd be far better served just going direct to them.

Thanks!!

This is why people need to pick up the phone and call the vendor or company if there is a problem. Many people do not and instead complain about their dissatisfaction on forums. More than once I've read about problems and when asked if they called a vendor the answer was no, they'd just consider it a loss.

your right on that. i asked ground up about how many returns they had on fenders for 70 chevelles and they said 5. out of 100s. i cant see that they all were able to be fitted , even if they needed work

Scott & Rick, we took them back early this morning & exchanged for another. It fits somewhat better. The previous one was made a little different also.
And you're right about people not calling their vendor. I don't know why that is, but in order to correct the problems, communication is a must.
We deal with this every day.
Insurance companies are demanding that we use A/M parts, but if they don't fit, they don't care. In order to return them (and before we can use OEM) we have to send photos to the Vendor AND the Insurance Company.
One of the largest A/M parts vendors in the country told me about a month ago that we return more parts than most shops. That's because they send us stuff that doesn't fit.
He said that they just put it back in Inventory & sell it to the next body shop. That's what's wrong with my industry.

My vender told me the same thing. If it doesn't fit, and I didn't cut it up he will take it back and give me a different one. The old one will get sold to a body shop where insurance is paying the bills and the shop gets to deal with it

this is good to know, from the parts that do not fit and a vendor helping to rectify the situation. and just a note, even factory parts had there problems. maybe not fitment so much but dings and returns from other dealers that should not have been returned. i dealt with that on several occasions where parts were either used or had seen some kind of bodywork.

Just a follow-up to confirm that we indeed exchange mrblackwell's quarter, and to assure everyone that it will NOT be placed back into our inventory for re-sale. We'll claim it with Dynacorn, and if they refuse, we'll discount it a ton in our large "scratch and dent and buyer-beware room" in Florida.

FWIW, I did not take any offense, or have any problem, with the way mrblackwell presented this issue here on the forum.
