This has been discussed many times here, and a quick search will get you a ton of useful info. But if you want the short answer, I can tell you that the changeover is very simple.
First of all, you don't want to dye the console, you want to paint it. The vinyl dyes work very well with the soft, flexible vinyls. For the rigid plastic of the console, I recommend SEM products. They are available in rattle cans from your local automotive paint supplier among others. The consensus seems to be that Satin Black is the best finish, but Landau Black also works well. Be certain to use the SEM Plastic Prep and follow directions on the can to the letter, and the results will be stunning.
