I run 2 optima batts for bracket racing with no alt. At the track I use a 40amp charger. When I charge 1 seems to get hot, I've heard that when that happens the batt. is going bad. Sometimes the batteries are a little low and it wont crank even with the 2. Any tips on charging? I have them hooked together pos to pos. neg to neg with each having a 10 gauge going to body ground and 1 going to chassis ground. When fully charged it cranks fine.

Try charging them individually at home and see if they load test ok. Does your charger have a lower rating? 40 amps may be just be overheating the battery. I know some chargers have a 50 amp start position for short time use. I charge mine with a 10amp charger and it doesn't take long to bring it back to charge.

Dueling batteries? The bigger one will win every time.

Optima used to be made here in the U.S.A., but from what i read that is no longer the case. I'd replace the optimas with one Odyssey and an alternator. It will make the car weigh less too.
