I have a 283 stock engine. A friend of mine, (call him John), told me that I could install dual exhaust without headers by cutting my exhaust pipe at the "Y" connection and running straight pipes from this cut point out to the rear of the car. I thought you had to install header first.

Thanks for any input that puts this issue to rest.

Yes it can be done that way, but I don't know how much more effecient it would be. A true dual exhaust just means that each side of the motor had its own exhaust that goes out the tail pipes. In other words, cylinders 1,3,5,and 7 have there own exhaust pipe with a muffler, and 2,4,6 and 8 cylinders have there own exhaust pipe with muffler. You don't have to have headers to have a dual exhaust system, but I would highly recommend them. Just make sure the primary header size is not too big!

Sure, you can have dual exhaust without headers. I've had a couple camaros, and a big block truck with duals, and factory manifolds. Maybe the dual exh helped, maybe not. They definately sounded better though.

What I'd do, is take off the Y pipe all together. Have an exhaust shop custom bend a dual exhaust to fit your manifolds, and your car. 10-15 years ago, I could get this done for about $200. Probably cost you a bit more nowadays.
