as the title states - this is my first drum brake job, done a billion disc in my life.

anyhow, I took the car apart about 6 months ago and had a few springs and clips laying on my work bench. after an hour or so, I'm pretty sure I have them back together about 95%, but there is on thing im not sure of.

I picked up a new spring kit, nails, etc. the springs that go on the shoes (blue and green in this pic, blues are shorter), that the pin goes through to hold the shoe in place. my kit and this one I found online only come with four of the silver twist clips that hold the pins in place. I would assume you would need one spring on each shoe and a total of four clips per side, but im obviously incorrect here. I figured out the little guides help keep the pins straight, but don't seem to have hold the pin from sliding out.

any help is greatly appreciated! thank you

you didn't take pics when you took it apart?

i tried figuring out what you are asking, but i have no idea.. that pic to me shows what looks like everything you'd need to put both sides back together- make sure you get the adjusters on the proper sides, and the shorter springs and the little cup/spacer things go on the side with the parking brake arm...

of course not, that would make things too easy :)

I have them back together - my question is.. If there are 4 pins/nails you would need 8 of the clips to hold them in place correct (one for each side of the nail) ? The pic only shows 4, which is what I also received in the kit.

I should have looked at the sticky post by Tom! I found my answer... I was putting the nail through from the top (shoe side) instead of the backing plate doh! I should be on track now.

Thanks for the replies.

Your pic has enough stuff for 1 set of brakes for both sides (front or rear). To keep the nail from falling out (if your rt handed) you hold the shoe in position with your left thumb, put your fingers over the backing plate with one finger on the head of the nail to keep it from falling out, now put on the spring and keeper and your done. 1 nail and 1 keeper per shoe (2 shoes per wheel, 2 wheels = 4 nails & 4 keepers)

Todd,
pM me your email. I'll send you a picture of a completed assembly.

One newbie mistake to watch for is getting the leading and training shoes backwards. On a Chevelle, the short shoe is the leading shoe.

Another is getting the self adjuster screws on the wrong side. They're directionally sensitive and are labeled "L" and "R"

Do one side completely, then the other...!
An old trick from long ago. Still a great way to proceed on repairs that come in twos.
