I have the rear out of the car now. While it is out, I am taking advatage of all of that open space back there and replacing the rear brake hose and cleaning up some other stuff. I want to drop the gas tank, replace both of the little rubber pieces of fuel line and clean the sock in the tank.
Any special tricks to removing a gas tank? How about removing the sender unit/fuel sock? Is this a gasket type seal?
I know I have to remove the 3/8" and 5/16" fuel lines, and the ground wire. Where is the wire for the sender unit?
I siphoned about as much gas out of the tank as I could already.
This is for my 70'.

Get as much gas out as possible. That's my only trick to tell you. I would replace that entire sending unit as well as the gasket. You don't want to put it back only to find out 2 months later it crapped out. The sender wire is attached to the top of the sender, you can't miss it.

Wow that was remarkably easy. It is out! Took me about 15 minutes once it was empty.

Well my sock on the pickup tube wasn't much of a sock. It is torn. Can that piece just be replaced by itself or do I need the entire sending unit assy? I ohmed out my unit and it is perfect throughout the range.

DG, where did you get the sock from? I called my local GM parts counter and Autozone and NAPA. No luck.

I don't know if this option appeals to you or not, but I pulled mine last year and the local speed shop recommended leaving the sock off and simply putting a good quality inline filter before the pump. I picked up a nice looking Russell unit that I mounted to the frame rail and it has a replaceable element. As long as the sending unit is good I should never have to drop the tank.

I thought about leaving the sock out completely. I have a good filter between the mech pump and the carb. Is the sock really necessary? Some people say remove the sock and install an external filter between the tank and pump. Then others say never put a filter between the tank and a mech pump.......but don't all cars have that because the sock is a filer isn't it?? So basically everybody has a filter between the tank and pump. Maybe I'll start a new post in the Perf section for this.
