I have a 70 Chevelle with power windows. The window came down, but it will not go up. How can I tell if it is a bad switch or a bad motor. How do I get to the switch, and how do I get to the motor if needed?

TIA, Kevin

Kevin,

How's the project going ? Did you ever galvanize the chassis ? Steve Strassmier should be able to help with that window problem....

Is it inop from both switches? If so, might be the motor. If it works from one switch but not the other, its the switch.

Hi John, Haven't got to the chassis yet, but I am doing the body work on the front clip. Core support is complete, and I am restoring the pass side fender right now. Progress is slow but sure.

Hi Dave, As soon as I get my airbag problem fixed, I'll see you at League City on Fridays. Doh, there's a switch in the back?

Power windows and door locks work by reverse polarity. To get the window up one wire has 12V and the other is grounded. To get it to go the other way the one wire that had 12V is now a ground and the other will have 12V instead of a ground.
You should be able to unplug the motor wires and put on a test light across the two wires going to the switch. Press the switch one way and it will light up. Press it the other way and it will light up again. If so the motor is bad but if the light only lights up by pressing the switch one way then the problem is in the switch(s).
