I am getting ready to replace skins on my 70 Chevelle doors. I removed the old ones and the cross bars for the shells were not welded in good and came apart, the other one is barely hanging on as they were bugger welded. Someone has been inside before as one skin has been replaced.

Need advice on correcting. Should I leave them loose and let the door skin dictate where they should be located and then tack weld in? Or is there a way to pre-locate? Or do they just attach to the skin and not attached to the main shell body? Pics showing the bar I am referencing.

Rust encapsulating next.

Cross bar welded in and skins are on. I rough positioned the crossbar and tacked it in, verified with the skin fitment and then welded it in place. Seems to fit good and I bet the assembly line had a plus or minus tolerance of a mile anyway in the 70's.
