When i got my 69's new door panels from OPG they didn't come with the metal support piece that runs along the top of the panel. I found some in a junk yard but i don't see how to connect the two. It looks like the cardboard backing of the door panel was pressed into the metal. Anyone faced this, got any tips or suggestions?

Take them to an upholstry shop. Trust me. They are a bitch to put together. I paid I think 10 bucks a panel for mine to be done and they look ausome.

just a little warning

I had an upholstry shop do mine and whenI tried to put them on, all the holes were off about 1" so they wouldn't fit on the doors
I think they must have attached the cardboard up too high or something

When I took them back, they told me it was the manufacture's fault and when I talked to the supplier, they said it was the upholstry shop's fault

I think if I had it to do over again I would take the whole car or at least a diagram so they would have something to measure from and discuss the problem with them before hand

I have done a few sets of these and they are not really difficult, just time consuming. The metal top part can be put in place with pop rivets and washers. A little contact adhesive for the upholstery and you are done. New window scrapers (the fuzzy things) can also be installed with pop rivets at this time. If I recall, there is a notch at each end of the metal top part. This notch will line up with the top of the cardboard door panel. Of course a measurement of the panels and metal part on your door would be a good thing. As for the metal clips for holding the panel to the door, go to a body shop supply and get new ones along with the plastic sockets. I found that they were listed as BMW 7 millimeter parts. This is definitely a good rainy day job.

I bit the bullet and bought them from Year One with this already done. Some things are just not worth doing your self.

I attached mine with aluminum pop rivets:
1.Temporarily tape new panel to door in the position you want it.
2.Hammer "prongs" on metal top flat, and set on door overlapping new panel.
3.Mark panel where metal top ends, remove both pieces.
4.Clamp top to panel on both ends, drill hole for rivets, I used the shortest 1/4" rivets I could find and used a washer on the inside of the panel to keep from pulling out. I mounted mine with the head of the rivet to the covered by the foam and vinyl.
5.Use a good spray adhesive to install first the foam and then the vinyl over the metal top.
6.Install the weatherstrip (window fuzzy) the same way with rivets.

That is the way I did mine 8 years ago and they still are together.
