I Bought A Set Of Afr 210 Heads For The 383 Project. I Was Checking The Dome Clearance With My Srp Pistons And They Won't Clear The Afr. I Got To Looking On The Net And I Noticed That The Chambers Resemble The Vortec. They Also Resemble The Brodix 11x And The Pro Topline. Keith Black Has A Set Of Forged Pistons Made For Vortec Heads. They Are The Only Thing I Could Find That Are Reasonably Priced And Have The Compression I Need. I Am Pretty Sure The Srp Pistons I Have Are For The "old School" Type Of Chambers. Anyways, I Bought The Afr Heads So I Could Go "new School" . Shall I Go All Out And Make The Afr Heads Work, Or Shall I Just Go Old School Becuase I Know It Works??? THE PICTURES ARE AS FOLLOWS THE BRODIX 11X CHAMBER, THE PRO TOPLINE CHAMBER, THE AFR CHAMBER, OLD SCHOOL DOUBLE HUMP VS. THE STOCK VORTEC CHAMBER. THE KEITH BLACK PISTON THAT WILL FIT THE VORTEC CHAMBER. THE OLD SCHOOL STYLE SRP PISTONS. THE DOME HITS THE AREA RIGHT BELOW THE SPARK PLUG HOLE THAT IS NEXT TO DECK OF THE HEAD.

I would just lay back the piston til it sits on the block & does not touch the chamber with no head gasket
DO NOT MESS WITH THE HEAD

The chamber is shaped this way for a reason ;)

Perfect advice....

Modify the piston to fit or get new pistons but use the AFR head no matter what. The new ELiminators are leaps and bounds above any other 23' head on the market currently. Your performance advantages are worth any BS you have to go thru to get them bolted on. I know most aftermarket pistons dont require any grinding....Im surprised that the SRP's do. If you speak with them mention I would be willing to send them a head so they could build a piston better suited to our more efficient combustion chamber design.

Keep us posted...

Regards,
Tony

PS...Mike...got your message...will call you on Monday!

Tony,

Start a thread with all info comparing old to new heads with photo's and flow #'s so people can see the difference

And turn off the #$%^ caps lock!

What are you referring to?
If it was my post there was a reason for the big bold letters, I have seen the results of someone messing with a great design
Some things need to be in bold, :D

Sajomatic:

What are your compression goals? Why are you using that large of a popper? Are the pistons returnable before you cut on them? If you want max compression, you should have smaller combustion chambers, or larger engine. Who is lapping the valves?

Mike ,I think he's referring to the original post as I don't see any other's that qualify

I would like to have around 12.5 to 1 compression. I did do some looking at the je piston website. It states that the afr 227 does require a special piston. The website does not state anything on the 210 heads.I have the 210 heads. The je website does show some pistons that are designed for a 60/40 split. The pics show how each piston is designed for the correct cylinder. The srp pistons i have are not 60/40 , they are assemetrical. They are a universal type dome, not 60/40 or left /right.The domes on the 60/40 might work. I will have to call.

The 60/40 refers to the valve position it has nothing to do with being asymmetrical.
Your valves are in the stock L98 position so you do not want valve pockets in the pistons moved unless you wish to use the pistons as a valve stop :D
On a dome piston you need to either modify the dome if it hits or you need to contact your favorite piston company & see if they have addressed their domes for the new head.
AFR will need to get a head to the piston company or someone will need to do a chamber mold for them.

Update, srp says massage the area on the piston that is touching.Srp says they don't have a dedicated piston for the afr heads. Afr tells me to call wiseco. Wiseco tells me to use a full round gas ported piston!!! I told the guy it is a street strip vehicle. I talked with a tech at keith black. He asked me to e mail a pic of the afr chamber. We both agreed the piston part number kb733 should clear and fit the chamber really well. I have had really good luck with the keith black hypers in the past. The kb pistons i ordered are the premium forged series. I should have them later in the week. I will keep you posted.
