I took my number one spark plug out today to find TDC and noticed some black stuff on it:

I blew a little bit of it off, but is this normal or could it mean I'm running too rich?

They look good for as old as they are. The black stuff you see is carbon. If it was rich the porcelin would be black, not the brown color you've got.
