I am trying to decide between using a Weiand Pro-Street 177cid blower and a ATI Procharger on my new 454 for my '70 Elky. I think the deciding factor might be the gear whine, which I want. I don't think the ATI Procharger will have any whine at all (or does it?). Has anyone used the ATI Procharger? Thank you for your time.

Yes the mini-blowers do whine, its the nature of the beast. I'm not sure of the gear whine on the small P600 ATI, but I have a D2R ATI which I know will have a whine when installed on my 468.

Actually the whine noise is not from the internal gears. The whine is caused ny air being compressed between the belt and the pulley teeth.

One trick to quiet a blower whine is to drill some holes in the root of the splines on the pulleys allowing the trapped air to escape.

Yes, the ProChargers make noise that you'll definitely hear. Even the SC models which ATI claims are quiet; don't believe them!

As far as the belt pulley air issue, I had heard that about roots-style blowers, but I'm wondering if that's true with the centrifugals. I'm running a D1SC with an 8-rib serpentine belt and it's louder than I wanted. The reason I question the drilling of holes (which I'll do if it works) is that the serpentine belts are also used on all late-model cars with no noise. I've had 8-rib serpentine belts running A/C compressors, alternators, etc. and you don't hear a thing. But I fire up this ProCharged engine and you immediately hear the blower whine; seems louder at idle than higher rpm's.

Todd may be right.

The loud whine I hear from my 8-71 sounds like it's coming from the external part of the blower as opposed to internal (gears).

I'm still trying to figure out the correlation between the whine and trapped air as explained by Todd though. It sounds more mechanical than air. But a lot of people have explained that it is from the trapped air.

On a cog belt blower drive there is air trapped between the cogs and the splines of the pulleys. With cog belt drilling relief holes in the pulleys should have an effect. Also, if a cog belt drive is just slightly out of line it will make more noise and wear drive belts prematurely. With a serpentine belt drive, as most non-race ATI ProChargers use, the noise comes from the step up blower drive (ATI refers to this as the blower transmission), the step up is usually a drive ratio like 4.44-1). The gears in the ATI ProCharger are of low helical design, just like big truck and M22 transmissions - by design they will be noiser, but stronger, than high helical gears.

Of course the fact of a blower/supercharger compressing air will make noise too.
