Chevy put fan shrouds in to make the fan and cooling system work better better.
They had engineers design the cooling. Are you and engineer?

Re: is a fan shroud manditori

You should always run a fan shroud. Doing so will allow the fan to pull cool air from outside of the engine bay through the radiator. Without a shroud, the fan will pull and move around all the hot air surrounding the engine.
To check the coolant flow, pop the radiator cap off, start the car and let it run. You should see the coolant come gushing out of the rows within the radiator as the thermostat opens. If it's trickling, you have bigger issues than the fan shroud.

You don't need one if you never idle or sit in traffic. At highway speeds its actually in the way but it gets much more cooling than it needs so it doesn't matter. But idleing the fan will not suck air thru the radiator and will not hardly cool at all. Answer for a street car yes.

Yes. Your fan is just blowing air around the engine compartment without it, instead of pulling air through the radiator to cool the fluid which cools your engine.

im running my chevelle with out a fan shroud and its getting really hot fast. can it be cause of that or can it be the water pump or thermostat.
What engine are you trying to cool. B/c some of the small v-8's didn't come with a shroud unless you had factory a/c.

Definitely use a radiator shroud. Make sure the fan is half way 'in' the shroud and halfway 'out' of it., looking at it from the side. This allows the cool air to be pulled into the radiator and then dissipate it in an already warm engine area.

I never used one until last year when I upgraded my system with a new radiator, clutch fan and a shroud. The difference with a shroud is very obvious the first time you get caught in traffic. Yes use a shroud it will surprise you how well it works.
