I was looking on the local Craigslist for a radio receiver and was surprised at how many Dish tv receivers are for sale (or free). What is the story here? Is dish getting dumped in favor of something else?

I would suspect cable, AT&T UVerse, or the Verizon version. Sat broadband doesn't compare with the others and broadband is usually cheaper when bundled with TV.

be careful buying used Dish Network receivers- the people might have gotten it shut off for non payment, and if you buy the receiver, you will have a hell of a time getting it reactivated without paying the past due balance.
