All,

Does anybody know how many bolts are needed to disconnect a 454 from a th350 trans? Im pullin the block and was wondering if all i need to do is to pull the engine mount bolts and unscrew a couple transmission bolts and thats it?? sounds too easy so its probably not. Step by step would be great. Engine is already disconnected from everything except Trans.

Should be 8 bell housing bolts, and 3 converter bolts.
I think that's 6 on the bell :)

What would be the easiest way to get to these bolts? Should i support the trans or will it stay once unbolted?

I take out the crossmember and tilt the entire mess down a little, makes getting to the top 2 LOT easier.

EDIT, it's going to have to come out anyway, as is the drive shaft :)

Edit again... You will also absolutely want to support it, there are (or should be) 2 guide pins (one on each side of the bell) but they are mainly to help line things up when re-installing.

Not sure what compression you are running but you might want to get one of these also, or take your plugs out because you are going to have to turn it over to get all 3 torque converter bolts out.

If you lower the back of the engine, make sure you don't join the thousands of us who have let the distributor smash against the firewall.
Take the 3 torque converter bolts out before you take out the bell housing bolts. You can get at those by removing the flex plate cover. You will need a flex plate turning tool or big screwdriver (not as good) to rotate the engine and get at all the flex plate bolts. It will help to have the plugs out to rotate the engine, but not a must.

YES! You will have to support the transmission, or it will hit the floor (or nearly) when you separate it from the engine.

All thats left on the engine is the lower rotating parts. Basicly a long block. Turning it over is going to be dificult. Alot more to this then i originally thought. Thank you all for the advice.

Don't get freaked out, it's really not that bad. 30 or 40 minutes after you have done it 20 times or so :)

I always like to re-install the cross member bolts facing up, that way you don’t see them sticking out from under the car…. That’s just me ;)

Unless you have a lakewood like me... then there are about 1,046 bolts on the bell ;)

Finally got it out! All by my self lol. Also found out that it has hi perf stamped by the oil filter and on the back of the block. So i have a 289 454 2 bolt block that had 781 heads and two castings of hi perf pass on it. This should make a solid foundation for my 650+hp build. Ill post pics tomorrow. Thank you all for your help. The flex plate is giving me a hard time now. Keeps turning/twisting as i try to loosen

every 454 block i've ever seen has said "HI PERF PASS" on it..

regarding loosening the flexplate: jam a big screwdriver in one of the big holes in the flexplate and turn it until the screwdriver wedges against the starter mounting pad...

Youll need to lock the fly wheel with vice grips or a round pry bar, while loosining the bolts.
