Hi guys,

i have a rebuilt 327 in my 66'Impala. The problem is, the engin has never been fired, and has been in the car in my driveway for about five years. after all of this time i just noticed that it's been sitting without an oil filter, i didn't have the oil sending unit instaled either, and there is some dirt inside the hole where the oil sending unit goes. What can i do to safely start this engin? Does anyone think that dirt will be a problem.

The dirt in the sender hole can be blown out when you "prime" the pump properly before starting. Just leave it out till oil flows out the hole, then put the sender in. I would think that rust would be a bigger concern than what ever dirt could get in the engine via the oil filter mounting plate. After 5 years it may be locked up with moisture between the pistons, rings and cylinder walls.

Squirt some oil in the spark plug holes and leave it overnight, then squirt some more try and turn the crank by hand, and make sure to prime the engine with some EOS in the oil before you try and fire her up.

Hopefully all is well.

Good luck.

Oil is likely going to shoot out of the sender hole - not just dribble, when you prime the oil system. Be prepared.

Where spark plugs installed the whole time it sat for 5 years? Was there a carb on it? If yes, was it covered? If no, was the intake covered?

After 5 years of sitting you may get lucky but don't be too surprised if you don't.

Good luck,

Dan

It's not locked, i can turn the engin by hand, But i have no idea how much rust has built up around the rings.

Yes there were spark plugs in it, and they still look brand new, no rust or corrosion on the plugs at all, and there was no carb on it, but the intake was coverd. Thanks

word of caution, do not put too much mystery oil and such in the sparkplug holes. You do not want to hydralock the motor! don't put in more than the size of you combustion chambers. Remember liquid doen't compress, so if you over fill it and the piston goes up on the compression stroke, it will come to a sudden stop. and may damage the rods, bearings or pistons . Jim
