Symptoms seem to indicate the turn signal switch needs replacement.

What year car? My friends 65 was doing this and it was because the actual bulb sockets in the back were not grounding well.

When you step on the brakes, put on the left or right turn signal. Does the opposite brake light go out or is it whichever the turn signal is on that that brake light goes out??

68 el camino, and when I step on the brake it doesn't matter which side directional was on, everything goes black. I recently did a disc brake conversion (front only) and the only thing I messed with was the brake light switch on the pedel, i'll check groundings tonight when I get home
