whenever i drive my 68 malibu at night, it seems as if at idle my dash/headlights are dim(not dim to the point where it is a problem) but when i accelerate, my dash lights and headlights get brighter. I have an internally regulated alternator. I have read that voltage regulators may be the cause of this. Is it possible to change the voltage regulator in an externally regulated alternator? How hard is it to do, or am i better off getting a new alternator?

Which wire to i put the VOM on? not a 1 wire alt. If it is low, what should i do? Also, when i get on the gas, my Volt gauge goes up to 16V. Is this any indication too?

Measure the big fat wire to ground. Looking for a max voltage of about 14.7 volts. No, you should not see 16 volts on your car volt gage but might not believe your volt gauge. Maybe move the sense line but one thing at a time.
