I picked up my newly rebuild engine from the builder. The engine was painted and looked perfect. The pan was painted so I didn't want it to touch while hauling it home, so I supported the engine in the back by the engine block, and front by the balancer. My question is; could I have scored the front main bearing and crank by hauling the engine with 1/2 the weight bearing in the crank. I hauled the engine about 90 miles. Thanks for the advise.

If the bearings were prelubed correctly durring bottom end build and the motor didnt move arround much or at all over hopefully smooth roads and not reall bumpy road surfaces during the trip you should be fine.

The only way i could see the bearing scoring is if there is no motor assembly lube on it and the crank is actually being turned when some of the weight of the motor is on the crank.

No problem what so ever & I don't care how bumpy the ride was :D

This rates up there with hurting the thrust by pounding on the damper

And no I am not recommending installing a damper with a hammer but it was the only way it could be done many moons ago,,,,
Way back when men were men & sheep were nervous,,,

OUCH MIKE!!!!!,what did i do,this wasn't aimed at you at all? (I don't care how bumpy the ride was)

What i meant by bumpy ride was if the bearing was dry and the motor moved around enough to actually rock a little from left to right to left while being supported on the crank when going around corners maybe this could have scratched the bearing or crank esp if there was any debries between crank & bearing.

I really dont think my reasoning was that far out of line esp if the motor in fact did in fact rock from right to left just a little bit which would be all it would take if bearing was dry and dirt/debies was in between bearing & crank which could happen.

But it would be highly unlikely that there would be any debires inbtween crank & bearing and that it would be dry with no assembly lube unless the engine builder was asleep or did a very poor job assembling the bottom end.

Have a good one....Scott

Scott,, dude,,,
You need to lighten up, mellow out,,, take a pill :D :D :beers:

Notice the smiley face at the end of my sentence???
This means it was not serious,,,, I found your reasoning amusing is all, it was not a personal attack on you.
Did you read the complete post?
Did it seem like I was being dead serious to you?

Trust me, if you post something I disagree with or think is misinformation there will most likely be no question that my opinion was I felt it was wrong.
But something like how one transports an engine unless it is uncovered in a dust storm is not one :p

But if you feel we must be serious here at all times then here is a more serious answer.
Unless the engine was assembled with dirt as a lube in which case transporting in what ever fashion would be the least of his worries there is no issue with supporting the front by the damper
And if there was dirt in the bearing don't you think the major concern would be when the engine was first fired rather than any transportation issue.

Now, if my style offends you, you have my apologies but I don't really think too many took it as a personal attack on your character so stop pouting,:pout: be happy, and by all means,,,,, have a nice day mate,,,, :)

Hi Mike,no i dont think your that serious all the time, and i did see the smiley face thingamjiggy.

But for some stupid reason i guess only little ole me would think that i had ticked you off a bit which i though could have come from what i had said about the engine builder in general esp if the builder turned out to be you and i didnt know it.

I just didnt want to tick off a great contributor to this site as yourself.

I consider you as one of the best motor builders on this site and wish i lived close enough to use your services and but cant afford to shipblocks/heads etc all the way out to you for machine work,my loss.

I know my way arround motors since i have working on them for over 35yrs now but i always learn new things from your posts/suggestions.
