Steel prices are rising dramatically this summer. Pick your news source of choice as there are varying reasons why. The company I work for is a sheet metal furniture/storage systems manufacturer and as of June 1 we are looking at a range of anywhere from 1%-45% price increase across approximately 30,000 line items.

Needless to say some of our customers are none too happy with it!

I would venture to guess that the price increase you're seeing in automotive steel products is a direct result of the increase in cost of raw materials.

This is what happens when we keep buying crap made in Chine. 15 years down the road they can afford what we can because we shipped them so much of our money. Just think if it all stayed right here in the US. $5.20 diesel would still be nothing more than a bad dream.

I'm kinda thinking that too, Seth.

I have heard, although not confirmed, that Chinese steel production will cease (along with all other manufacturing operations) in and around Beijing to reduce pollution for the upcoming summer olympics. This is supposedly causing an increase in demand for steel elsewhere (HERE for example) and steel manufacturers are jacking prices up.

What the United States needs to do is go back to the times of the Industrial Revolution. We have to keep jobs in America by manufacturing our own items. Because of the price of fuel rising with no end in sight, Railroads have to become instrumental in shipping goods across the Nation. 18 Wheelers should be limited to delivering from the depot to a specific area, that should depend upon the location of other surrounding depots.

Really? We are maintaing a strong (for the area) price for scrap steel in the area of $200 - $220 per ton and have no problem selling 'up the line'. But with the price of fuel, I expect this will start to drop possibly as soon as July...

I've heard the bumpers will be taking a hit soon too - triple whammy on the base steel and the chrome, and the air quality controls in the plants. I just bought mine to be delivered to the Super Chevy Show in Commerce, GA. Why don't all of you come there and take all my old stuff off my hands this weekend - it's swap meet time again.
