Aaron, is this in a self-sustaining type definition, as in "Son, you're an adult now, take care of yourself", or in a parting of company well wish, as in "see you in 6 months, take care of yourself"?

It was used as a parting term. The way it was used had me wondering the meaning. I came away with the idea that the person who used it was concerned about my general well being a little more than usual.

yeah, strange remark... makes me think they dont plan on seeing you again for whatever reason... like a parting statement to an ex...
Interesting. Never thought about that.

take care of yourself, is usually a term of endearment. in other words i hope to see you again. now, it can be in concern. did the earlier conversation include you having some difficulty or medical issue? it still leads back to an endearment.

freind of mine was sick recently. on the way out, i said, "take care of yourself", meaning i hope to see you again....

in other words, if you were heading out the door, would your rather hear, f off and die!, or take care of yourself ?

unless the person is a real jerk, it means, they hope to see you again....
