That is a northeast Ohio common garter snake. A big one. In my yard= no rodents.
Or a brown snake.

wife hates snakes, saw one in wood pile outside my cousins house, I was 15 ft behind her and in a split second plowed over me in opposite direction. My cousin was on the ground howling in laughter

He said it looked like a perfect "Bill Goldberg" spear from the WWF exicuted on me

Did you get up and drop “The People’s Elbow” or DDP’s “Diamond Cutter” on her?

With regards to avoiding snakes as a reason to live in -30 degree cold for half the year, I guess I’ve been fortunate. Lived in south Texas and Northern California for most of my life and only saw my first snake in the “wild” a year ago or so. A black and white banded California King snake I believe going across a flower bed in my back yard. Haven’t seen him since.
