I am trying to help my friend out... His blukhead/firewall connector (the back-side of the fuse box) has had the prongs broken off. The car was totally dead, and I traced it to this connection, pushed it on tight, and everything was fine...

To forego the expense and hassle of chenging out the whole harness, I thought we could just find an old harness and change the bulhead portion, separating it from the fuse box...

Seemed easy to me.

But I have been told the harnesses are different... Is it just the harnesses, or is it the bulkhead connector too?

His car is a 66, but has a lot of mix-matched parts, including a 67 floor-shift cluster (non-guage), but the car is an original floor shift car(so the cluster wasn't only changed for that reason)...

Does anybody know if the 67 bulkhead is the same? If not, what are the differences, so I can identify what he has?

Thanks for any help...

The 66 and 67 bulkhead connectors are the same. The problem will be getting the twinlock terminals out of the old bulkhead without damaging them. Twinlock terminals have 2 locking tangs that must be depressed before you can pull the terminal out of the bulkhead. This post has a picture of a twinlock terminal. The best tool to use to push down the tangs is a small jewellers flathead screwdriver that is about .050" or smaller. Once the tangs are pressed down, the terminal should come out freely. You must also lift the tangs back up before you plug the terminal into the new bulkhead, so that they look like the picture in the post.

Thanks Ken,

Yeah, I recently replaced some of the wiring on my 66 Convertible, including the starter and ignition wires in the engine compartment (running a HEI-got rid of resistor wire). It was fun getting those terminals out  , and I had the whole harness on a bench where I could work... I am sure it will be real fun while I'm under the dash... I still have a few old terminals, so I can review exactly where and how the tangs come out...

I am debating telling my friend that we should just pull the whole dash... Its painted pretty well, and has new chrome, but the speedo lense is wasted (and he has a brand new lense) and we were looking at those repro in-dash guages (similar to the factory guages)...

Need to drop the dash for that, so maybe we'll just pull the whole harness... That will be easier to work on, and we can look for any other problems...

This is what I need to change (thanks for the link).

We just need to swap that plastic. Of course, it will probably be much worse when we get in there...

Anyway, Thanks for the information. Now to just find someone with an old harness (cheap!)...

Anyone know where to get some of those terminals? I picked up some at NAPA a while back, but I never tried to see if they will work (look similar, but still in the package)...

Thanks Ken,

Tony
