Any of you guys know anything about having a factory Rally wheel cut, widened ant re-welded? I want to keep my 71 Rally wheels but definitely need to have as much tire on the ground as I can. My motor has a little extra horsepower over the factory LS5.
They are 15x7 now. I would like to have maybe a 9" or 10". Maybe the backspace could be optimized at the same time.
If anyone has done this or can point me in the right direction that would be great.

What is the factory backspace? Is it 4.5"? What would be considered optimal 5.5"? I don't want ANY rubbing issues or any of that crap. I am not lowering the car but I may have folks riding in the back seat. Maybe just adding an inch to the back side of the wheel.
Was thinking about 275/60-15, but what about the 295/50-15?
What do you guys think?

The best thing you can do is get a set of wheels on the car with loaded suspension and measure off of them. Each car is going to be a little different. There are a number of wheel shops out there that can cut out your center and weld it into any available hoop, 8s and 10s are readily available, 9s are not.

If you're looking for somebody to do it, check Pete Paulsen, Stockton Wheel, or the wheelkid over on the Hamb. I can't remember the name of his shop. Or you could do it yourself following this article:

It's Ford based stuff, but in the end the steel doesn't know who it belongs to.

I just checked , my factory wheels with the oval valve stem holes have a backspace of only 4.25"

Wheel Vintiques probably already makes what you want.
If not they can make them for you and save the hassle
I will certainly find out. I didn't know they made steel wheels. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm also in the same boat here, been thinking about rally wheels too but would like them wider for the rear so I could run a 295/50/15.
Also been wondering if someone is making an exact replica of the original style rally but in a wider diameter, like maybe 16"-17" so you could have the look and run some bigger brakes?

Ok just checked out Wheel Vintique's site and they have got Rallys in every way shape and form!
Also they have them in every possible backspacing you could want, in widths up to 10" and diameters of 14", 15", 16", 17", 18".

I'm thinking maybe a 16" and 17" combo for me.

The site says that the prices on them start at something like $112/wheel, so I think you'd be better off probably to go with these rather than spending the $$$ to cut and widen old Rallys.

I think he has the factory SS cast iron looking wheels for 71/72 Chevelles, not the Vette style rallys which are silver. I would not cut what I believe he has. He needs to find a set of the later Z28 round valve stem holed wheels to destroy, or he may regret it later.

I didn't see them anywhere on the site or in the catalog. Not the 71-71 Chevelle or mid-70's Camaro 5 spoke Rally's.

If you stick with 15" wheels, widening them to the inside might not work. The rear shock mount is pretty close to the rim as it is on a 4.25/4.5 backspace.

He is but he keeps using ralleys in place of SS-Z/28 wheels. Neither would I. Ditto on using a set of later wheels.

They are SS - Z/28 style wheels with oval holes. Look just like what came on 71 SS Chevelles. They may in fact be.
I like the look but need more tire in the rear to at least try and get traction. I do not want the 17" version. I like the look of the 15".

Would I have any issues at all with running these on the factory 15x7 factory 5 spoke wheels? Anyone have pics? I do not want any rubbing issues. I have did some trimming in the wheel well and would like the widest tire I can get under there that will work with the factory rims.
