I have them on my street car and love them just for fun factor. The consensus seems that it lowers backpressure. This causes a small increase in HP and decrease in torque. I suppose it depends on the setup you have now. My car idles the same, just sounds cooler. I have noticed it takes much longer on open to start my car.

I've noticed my 496s' idle is higher when I have my cutouts open. My 383 sounded much more radical with them open but my 496 sounds better at wot. Haven't had a chance to run with them closed to see how much et is effected.

Unless you're looking for ungawdly loud, just stick on a pair of Hooker Maximum Flow muffs.

They supposedly flow as well as a straight pipe. I have a set of 3" ones behind a 3" x-pipe - they are actually pretty quiet.....until you put your foot in it!

70ElkySS is right when he says "ungawdly loud" but that's half the fun of these things. I only open mine when I'm sitting at a stop light and there is a car spitting out 5000 watts of subwoofer noise or as I'm pulling into a car show. I don't EVER open them in the garage! I can't speak about performance gains/losses because I really don't "race" mine (we only have an 1/8 mile track) and the idle is a smidge higher, maybe 50 RPM.

From what I've heard all they're good for is making a lot of noise and the cap wing nuts work their way loose and then they leak....which is why I opted for a full length exaust with Ultraflow mufflers (see thru one end and out the other....smooth perforated tube).....but if anyone actually can vouch for any improved e.t.'s with them I'd like to hear it....

I've actually considered, but haven't been able to bring myself to install a set of electric cut outs just to make alot of noise on the street and then quickly shut them if the po po's are present.

I like the idea of opening them at the light when someone has their bass thumping....another one is when they're behind you thunping....to make use of the line lock and then leave them in a coud of smoke on green. :D

I have run them back to back at the track on my 396 a few times and almost every time just opening them gives me either the exact same time or a .1 slower. I have lost a cover twice one time the cover was gone and I had to make a new one and the other time the last wing nut held on. Both times though it made me wish I had electrics so I could do that whenever I wanted. Because it was definately a fun ride home.

how are the cable operated? and how easy is install on the electric
Electrics are easy...after you figure out where you want them to go you just weld in the standard cut-outs and instead of putting the block off plate (held on with 3 wing nuts) on you just bolt on the electric portion and run the wires up to the dash or wherever you want to mount the open/close switch. The cable ones...I wouldn't use them. If I couldn't have electrics, I'd stick with the removable plate or non at all.
Go here and you will see all you should need to see and fully understand them.

How do cutouts affect performance, back pressure, idle, and how the car runs overall? worth it for a weekend warrior mostly street car or not?
Tuned for the street thru mufllers..you most likely will see a decrease across the board in tq and hp.The tuneup will have to change with open exhaust on the track. For wow factor on the street..electric dumps win big time.Who cares about a few ponies lost when blowing off every car alarm for miles and the ability to roll them closed in 5 seconds.Wasn't me officer..it was the young lad in the black fox body just ahead.lol.

I wish i had the electric cut outs, but being only 19 i realized that saving 500 bucks and just using the manual ones was the way to go right now. When I get older and i dont want to get on the ground i will get the electrics.

Well that's (the old part!) the real reason I went with electrics  .
