hey guys, i'm putting some custom bucket seats into my 72 malibu in place of the stock bench, and i know that most likely none of the holes in the floor will line up with the seat tracks (including the bucket seat mounting brackets you can order from the resto suppliers). so what i'm going to do is weld like a 4"x4" steel plate to the floorboards, then drill through them and run the bolt through to give it a little extra support. so my question is, what thickness of steel should i make the plates out of? i don't have the first clue and i'm hoping that someone can help me out here. thanks in advance!

When I mounted f-bird buckets in my el camino, I used the stock forward outside hole to locate the seat. Then I drilled 3 floor holes, and used reinforcement under the floor.
I used a 2" diameter washer (type found in seat belt kits ) to reinforce the forward inside bolt and a 1/8" "L" bracket for the 2 rear bolt holes. The "L" bracket is a single piece that extends acrossed both holes.
