This is really just a question for my own curiosity and since I've been using this great site for the last few weeks I've found there are a lot of really good knowledgeable people here.

For 1970 cowl induction hoods I know of the "functional" type that has the flap on it and the "non-functional" type with no flap, just the hood bulge. I realize that when I see these on cars they may be repros or OEMs. I believe the functional hoods should always have the cowl induction letters on each side. I've seen the non-functional hoods both ways, with letters, and without. What's correct for the non-functional hoods? And are the non-functional ones actually considered cowl induction hoods or is there some other name for them and people just wind up calling them cowl induction and putting letters on them? Thanks in advance.

Tom,

Cowl induction hoods - ones with the flapper - have the "Cowl Induction" chrome lettering on either side of the dome.

Non cowl induction hoods or SS hoods have the dome but there is no badging or lettering. No hood pins either.

this is what i have learned on this site and from reading.....

in '70, you could either get the functional or non-functional cowl hood. the functional hood was an option, as were the hood pins. the SS engine options for '70 were either 396 or 454. from what i understand, in '70, the SS option only got you the domed hood and usually that meant no hood pins either.

in '71-'72, again the SS package got you the non-functional domed hood, but hoods pins were now part of the SS package. the SS engine options for '71-'72 were 350, 2 or 4 barrel, 396 (402) or the 454. the only cars to receive the functional cowl hoods from the factory were the 454 cars. the 350 and 396 (402) cars came standard with non-functional domed hoods along with hood pins. a functional cowl hood could be had with the 350 and 396 (402), but was usually dealer installed. i think, dont quote me here, but the functional cowl hood could be ordered from the factory, option #ZL2, on a 396 (402) car, but on a 350 car, it was usually installed by the dealer.

from '70-'72 the only cars the receive the chrome "cowl induction" emblems were the cars that had a functional cowl hood. if a non-functional hood has them, someone has put them there for looks.

This is what I have. I ordered a 70 SS 454/M-22 and some other stuff.
It came with the STANDARD SS hood ( DOMED ) that was body color with no stripes or hood pins. Many many options available to enhance the Z-15/Z-25 Pkg.
Mine is a bench seat, NO buckets,NO Gauges,NO Stripes.NO Cowl hood. But it does have other options that I ordered. -- Power Windows-- A/C-- Rem. Mirror--AM/FM--Aux. Ltg.--V-Top--Triple Black. And its a truck.
When I ordered mine, You went down a list with dozens of options and CHECKED off what you wanted. Other than Some color combos with a V-Top you could not get. Today it is Group 1-2-3-4 on trim levels no more pick and choose. I liked the idea of pick and choose. Today--- Take it or leave it!

Thanks for the answers all. What I'm gathering is basically that all functional hoods should have letters and non-functional hoods should not unless someone has put them there for looks. Just another aesthetic that I look at when I see one and I'll know if it's correct or not.
