Looks like I may need a vac system for the high compression 496. I have been losing oil out the back of the engine so I replaced the valve cover gaskets and installed 4 cotton open filters in the valve covers. I thought I had the the crank pressure and oil leak solved, but I think its now leaking out the back of the intake manifold.
Do I have any other options besides a vacuum pump? Anyone having any luck with an electric pump? By the way, the motor is a fresh build and I did not use gapless or low tension rings. Thanks for your ideas.

Are you blowing oil out the breathers or just blowing out the intake gasket ?? or both

I tried electric evac pump ..... could not regulate properly in the end went puke tank with AN 12 from each VC

FWIW .....I had a oil leak at back of engine ,turned out to be the dist not sealing at intake ( slip collar not right down) only bad under high rpm

No, the new cotton breathers are very clean. After 15 passes they are still dry.

I'm gonna say it is more than likely a true leak. I ran my engines with nothing more than breathers and down hoses and didn't have any engine leaks. I don't think it is crankcase ventilation related, unless the engine has EXCESSIVE pressure in which case there are other issues.

Thanks for that advice. I'm hoping it is a true leak. I'm going to try to get ahold of some oil dye and a black light and is if I can find it.

I had built a 383sbc for a cust and had some oil seepage issues.

Cured it by adding a -10 line from the fuel pump block off plate to a breather tank and adding a pcv valve into the intake valley also blocked the valley with a moroso oil shield to keep the splash down.

10hrs of cruising and 15passes at Cecil Co and no leakage.

Thanks for that info. Just what I was looking for. My PCV and manifold vacuum lines have trouble staying on at WOT.
Yes Cravydavey, that looks like a great price for a nice pump.

Never heard of that one, but it sounds simple and not to expensive.

Trey, Bill brought up a good thing to look at...did you use a gasket for the distributor or maybe forget to use one? I did that on mine once and it leaked like crazy. If you suspect the back of the intake or just want to make sure, put a bead of the Right Stuff under the intake along that back wall. If you used standard rings then it shouldn't be building up unreasonable pressures. I have one open Moroso breather in each valve cover and no leaks....a vacuum pump could be worth a few hp if you don't mind the expense.......

I did the engine dye and black light trick yesterday. The only oil I had leaking was just a little around the back of the valve covers. Also turns out when tranny fluid gets dirty on the bottom of the floor pans, it very much looks like motor oil.:clonk: Yep it was the trans fluid. I installed a new pan gasket and replaced the gasket on the governor housing (it looked like original 1969 vintage). I hope this takes care of the leak. I will be going to TNT friday and try it.

I also found that I'm not getting wide open throttle either. We checked it 3 weeks ago and it was ok. I think the pedal arm bent, so I removed it and put a little more bind in it. I hope that is why the new combo has not run the et that it should.

Well you were right the leak was at back of motor :D Bent pedal arm " been there " you may want to think about a basic adj throttle stop on rear carb stud .. so you dont over push the pedal it solved that issue for me I have it adjusted so WOT is about 1/2" off the floor
