Just picked up a bare 454 block that a guy got as far as installing the crank. When I looked at it, I noticed that the main bearings have some type of soft white sealant that must have been used on the bearings and it's "oozed" out.

I cant say that I've ever seen sealant used on bearings. Is this normal and okay or should I tear it apart?

Thanks!

Unless the guy was a TOTAL idiot, it is NOT sealant. It is some kind of an assembly lube. Maybe a white moly lube. VERY common.
To verify, touch it with your fingers. If it feels greasy, its assembly lube and you're just fine.

One of my guys assembled an engine with it before he worked for me. Engine sat almost 7 years till car was ready to be finished. He did not feel real comfortable just putting the engine in and starting it after all tohose years so they pulled the pan. He said the 105 looked like the day he assembled it 7 years before. Still soft, no drying out. ....... good stuff ! We use it pretty regularly unless we know an engine will be started very soon after we fininsh it.

Thanks Guys! went out and took a closer look tonight, and sure enough, it's "grease" like.

Now for the irony...I have a tube of the same stuff up on the shelf!
