I am wondering if there is something I need to watch out for here. I have sold a lot of cars and motorcycles on Craigslist with out any problems. Cash only, no checks. I have a dirt bike listed (24 years old)for $1000 and have a guy call from Los Angeles and wants to buy it. I told him I didn't want to hold it for him and he said he would deposit $100 bucks into my bank account to hold it. I won't do that and told him no. He says he can be here in Sacramento (8 hours away) by noon on Friday this week. I put him off and said some one was coming to see it. He called again later and left a message. I did not return his call and he called again and I figured what have I got to lose. I have told him cash only and he agreed. It makes me nervous that he is so eager to travel 8 hours to buy a bike he has only seen a picture of. Is there some thing for me to watch out for here? I am normally not paranoid but something seems odd. Thanks, RichF.

I bought and had shipped an old rusty GTO from Alabama to Oregon, also had a guy that wanted my 78 buick so bad he paid to have it shipped from OR to Michigan. (the car was only $400, he paid $800 in shipping) So, you might not know why but there are people that will go to great lengths to get something they want.

If he is going to show up and pay cash, what do you have to lose? Also, if he doesn't show, you still have a bike.

Make arrangements to do the exchange at a public place, like a supermarket parking lot, in the daylight.

Yeah, I figured what have I got to lose also. I guess it seems like a thousand miles round trip in a truck would cost a lot. I sold a El Camino to a guy across the country once and worried about that until it was completed. I just like to deal local I guess. You come and look at it and if you don't like it you don't buy it. I even told him he should look around L.A. for one, but he thinks this is the one for him.

There is a guy from LA that buys older bikes. The gentlman bought an 84 suzuki rm400 from me sight unseen for $500 non running missing some minor parts. He races and fixes the old timer bikes. I just got rid of the email from him the other day I was going to PM you to ask you his name. If you wanna PM me with his name and or email address (you dont have to give me the @------- part just the prefix to it. He as a matter of fact had a buddy of his that was 2 hours from here, come here and pick it up for him. He paid cash. He was a retired restoation guy was inot chevelles and now is into motorcycles and racing the old bikes.

google vintage motorcycles. Not everyone is just into chevelles. I found someone will restore just about anything. I posted my 87 200X honda ATC (last year) as far as San Diego from Tucson. I did have one guy interested, but the deal fell through. A buddy at work had a 175cc honda elsonore with a burned piston, needing alot of work. He ended up trading it to a guy for a Remington 12 gauge semiauto shotgun. I actually picked up 2 87 200X atcs from a guy that was into dirt bikes, I gave him a DT 100 and GT 80 for the trikes. jim

Yeah . I have been into bikes all my life. I went to a show a while back that was vintage Japanese bikes. Lots of Kawi 900's and Honda 305 scramblers and such . Pretty cool. I have a couple of Honda XR 350's and a Honda XL 350 also. I was surprised that a younger sounding guy (I'm 55) would have any interest in an old dirt bike and at how persistent he was. I guess it doesn't hurt to be cautious. Also when he wanted to put a deposit into my bank account made me cautious also. I hate to have some one drive that far and then be disappointed in the bike. Oh well, I guess a thousand bucks isn't much money any more. Thanks for the reply.

The deposit $$ into your account is a big red flag. Account numbers? Unless you meant PayPal or something like that.

Nah you guys need to get with the times :D To do a bank to bank deposit they dont need to have your account information at all (this all depends on your banking institution.) Mine you need the email address and make a security question. I have sent money this way before I think the user enters his information once he gets the email from the bank.

I've never sold vehicles on Craigslist, but Chevelle parts and other stuff. I always ask them to come to where I work. I don't have a garage and don't need strangers seeing the Chevelle in the back of the driveway.
I agree...cash only and I don't hold anything or do special deals...you get here first and it's yours.

I had a guy want my 280Z so bad we did the deal at 1am. He even had a 24hr notary meet us down at a 24hr Denny's. Every thing went fine. I did have my .45 in my back pocket though.

Thanks for the replies. Like dpvoiceguy said.- "cash only and I don't hold anything or do special deals...you get here first and it's yours." I have held on for people before and they flake out later. i told this to the guy but I realize that if you are driving 8 hours you should expect it to be there when you arrive. Then when he said he would give me a deposit to hold it and put it in my bank - I guess I figured O.K. here comes the scam. So I thought if he is serious I will give him a couple of days , till tomorrow- to get here and see what happens. Me and my wife both were thinking - is this guy crazy to drive all the way from L.A. for this bike? I guess I am behind the times. I guess I am spoiled a little too, I can always find what I want near by. My son was wanting a 70 Monte Carlo and i took a couple of trips with him an hour or so away and only to find junk, nothing like the car described in the add. I did put up pictures but I think there is nothing the same as seeing it in person. I will find out tomorrow. Thanks, RichF.

I flew out to Denver Colorado for my Chevelle and drove it back  Sometimes you have to look outside your scope for something you want.

It is a Yamaha TT 600 single cylinder 4 stroke. ( Not trying to make an add). Big old thumper. A lot of fun. I started fooling around with XR 350's when my son got one and they have a lot of power and are a lot lighter and easier to start. This is all pretty far off topic for the Chevelle page but Bench Racing is the best place I know of for questions on anything.
