Trying to find out some info.

Should any of the numbers on the Cowl Code match the VIN code?

The cowl code is as follows

ST 70 13680 KAN 405050 BDY
TR 764 28 28 PNT
12A 05284 L

I know that the following

ST70 - 1970
13680= El Camino Custom
KAN= Kansas City Plant
TR 764= Blue Vinyl Bench Seat
28 28 PNT= Fathom Blue
12A= First week of Dec
L= SS

What is the 405050 and 05284?

The Vin is 136800K137139
I got the VIN all decoded, that's no big deal.

The 405050 is the sequence build number and the 05284 is an internal plant code.
As far a the L=SS that is only a theory not a fact.

And to answer your first question about "Should any of the numbers on the Cowl Code match the VIN code?" - Not really. Aside from the extra numbers (of which inclusion varies from plant to plant and year to year) only the Fisher Body style number comes close.

However, the Fisher Body style number (such as 13680) DOES NOT indicate a V8 or L6 engine. On the VIN, yes the 3rd digit does indicate a V8 (even number) or L6 (odd number) but the Fisher Body style number does not.

I have numerous examples of trim tags showing a style of, say, 13617 where the VIN is 13517. The 1972 model year was an odd year with style numbers like 13637 but the VIN would read 1D37.

And, to emphasize jrfan8bud's note, the "L" has not been proven to indicate an SS-optioned car on a 70 (or any other year) Chevelle.

Is there a way to determine if this is an original 396 big block car? It has an unboxed frame. What motor might have been the right one?

Also, is there a VIN # stamped on the frame anywhere?
