I have a 70 Chevelle ss454 and I just changed out my stock/ old quadrajet carb for an Edlebrock 750cfm with an electric choke. The problem is, the cowl induction runs off the stock air cleaner assembly, which no longer fits because of the electric choke set up...any ideas on modification?

take a hammer to the air cleaner base until it clears? if you do it right, only you will ever know it was done.

uhhh, put the right carb back on? hacking up your CI to run one of those Edelbrock is not a step forward, IMO.

i agree- but it's his car, and he wants an Edelbrock, so i figured i'd offer the easiest solution- even tho there had to be a reason that GM decided to use the qjet instead of the Carter back when the car was first built.

Chris, in light of the suggestions so far in this thread, and also based on the good and the bad I've heard about those Edelbrock carbs, I'd put some mileage on the car while using your new carb before modifying the air cleaner assembly if I were you, just to make sure that you really want to stay with your carb choice. Because some guys rave about those Edelbrock carbs, while others claim they're worthless. So if you end up not liking your new carb, then you might be modifying your air cleaner for nothing.

If I were to take a hammer to the air cleaner which I would have no problem doing as the car is not totally a show car, would the electric choke assembly get fouled up? Also, I spent so much money on the eldlebrock electric choke carb i dont want to just take it off and start over.... :-(

Chris,if you changed to a holley soley to get an elec choke because the q-jet auto choke wasnt working properly they make a great elec choke for $49.95 that attaches to the stock position on the intake and operates the choke on the q-jet just like stock little original choke stove/spring did and your cowel ind air cleaner should fit ok too.

If your interested pm me for details on where to get it so you can switch back to the q-jet so things fit right and so you can also get better fuel mileage too.
