I'm trying to track down the correct fan and fan shroud for my 1970 350. I have the smaller radiator (3 bolt top), manual trans, and no A/C.

The big block & SS parts are pretty well documented. But there is no "Chevelle Non-SS Restoration Guide" for us lowly 350-types

I've looked at 2 different second-hand shrouds from guys who have said theirs was for a '70 small block, but they are completely different. The one I bought is #3938163 with a 19" diameter opening. Before I buy a fan, I want to make sure it's the right size.

Does anyone have a '70 small block who could describe their fan diameter & number of blades, and possibly the fan shroud part #? Does it have a fan clutch?

Thanks a bunch, Tom

Tom -

I have a 70 small-block and am pretty sure the non-AC 350 cars will have the standard 4-blade fan. AC cars will have a 7-blade fan and fan clutch.

As far as your shroud goes, you can order a new one right from the General, part #6261912. In fact, you can go to www.gmpartsdirect.com and order it online for $39.21 plus shipping. Good luck!

Tom,
The shroud you bought (#3938163) is the same part number as the one on my 69 350, dealer installed a/c, automatic. It fits my 4 bolt radiator top brace perfectly. Mine also has a 4 blade fan. Someone with a 70 assembly manual might be able to give you the original part number to help with your search.

Sorry Rainer. Didn't mean to indicate your suggested part number was incorrect. I thought he was looking for the "original" part number.

BTW, nice website!

Rainer - Very nice website indeed!

Danny, as I said, I have the "rare"
3-bolt top plate. It sounds like I bought one for the 4-bolt. Darn.

Rainer, do you think the non-AC 350 cars with the 4-blade still use a fan clutch? If not, do you think I could just use the fan from my old 1966 283?

Thanks,
Tom

No problem, Danny. That is both the original and the current correct part number. Thanks for checking out my site

From what I understand, the fan clutch was not used on an AC car. I don't know about the interchangeability of your 283 fan blade.

Rainer,

Are you sure on the A/C car not having a clutch fan?

My car is an A/C car, I have a clutch fan and it is the original one to the car. So this has me a bit confused. Did you mean non A/C cars came without clutch fans?

I'm so ofused!

My understanding is that A/C cars got the 5 or 7 (depending on year) bladed fan and the 5/7 blade fans were always mounted on a clutch and were always surrounded by a shroud.

I also understand that, in '66 anyway, if you ordered the HD cooling system you got the shrouded and clutched fan. If you placed a check mark in the "No thank you, I don't want to sweat my arse off" A/C box you also got the clutched and shrouded fan and an increased capacity radiator.

Sorry for the confusion. The only reason I mention the '66 is because I happen to have a 283 sitting in my garage with a 4-blade fan on it (no clutch, no shroud). You know which one - the old 4-blade fan where the blades aren't exactly perpendicular to one another. These fans were used on many cars in the sixties. And on many AMT model cars during that time

I was just wondering if this was essentially the same 4-blade fan used in '70 and if it would match up nicely with a '70 shroud.

I screwed up and forgot the "non" - I meant NON-AC has no clutch fan. That's what I said in my first post - sorry for slip
