I sold my old 7 blade clutch fan to my buddy who has a 71 like me. We both are running 350's and he is removing his 4 blade w/o a clutch and it has an adapter and long bolts. He called me this evening and told me he couldnt get the long bolts to fit in behind the clutch part of the fan because the clutch is in the way. When he used short bolts w/o the adapter, it comes up short of the rad shroud. I told him I would post here and see if we could solve the problem.

Anyone got any suggestions?

You need to use threaded studs & nuts in the water pump when using a clutch. You should be able to get the right parts at NAPA or Autozone. Intall the studs in the waterpump flange, them slip on the slut & fan assembly, then install the lockwashers & nuts. Fan position within the shroud will be correct. This assumes that he has a long style water pump. Post some pictures.

You DON'T use the long bolts. Short bolts, or studs.

Wrong length water pump; and/or wrong length fan clutch.

The fan should be about 1/3 to 1/2 way into the shroud, no deeper.
