I have this HP desktop that I recently acquired and it refuses to keep the correct time. I'm talking since this morning I reset the time and now it is off 3 1/2 hours. I've had them with low batteries but they always kept time while they were running. If I reboot this one or just turn it off the clock is usually no more inaccurate than when it's running. Any ideas? I do have it set to automatically update the time from the master clock on line but I doubt that is even working.

I've only had this problem when the battery on the motherboard that holds information for the BIOS has gone bad. On boot up it'd go back to 1/1/90 at midnight and wouldn't recognize the hard drive. I had to go into the BIOS each time to set it up to run but once running, it'd keep time.

Even if it's not on a network to get time corrections, it should keep time as long as it's on. I'd try changing the CMOS battery first.
Some virus programs will run in the background and hog a ton of CPU time and continually stop the system from updating the internal clock but I'd think you'd see other problems than just not keeping time.

That's what has me wondering, it doesn't keep time when it's running. I really haven't checked to see if it keeps time when it's off. I'll do that tonight.

It does not keep time any better when it is shut off. It seems that nobody has any experience with this problem.

Update. About 3 weeks ago, I pulled the cover and located the CMOS battery. Removed the battery and checked the voltage. 3 volts on the money. Put the same battery back in place and now the clock is working perfectly. It could have been a bad connection on the battery? Who knows. Thanks to all for helping me get this unit working properly.
