I have a few questions about cleaning a convertible top. First is what to use to clean it. I see they make dedicated top cleaners but wondering if anyone found a substitute. Also how does one avoid getting the cleaner and the protectant that was used on the top on their paint.
Have never used these products but I assume one wouldn’t want them dripping down or over sprayed onto the paint.

I haven't seen the need or use a special cleaner but, that doesn't mean I shouldn't be using one. I do use 303 protectant on my top and interior...I find that it leaves a good shine and it doesn't leave a residue that attracts or holds dust and grime.

Mike is that a vinyl or cloth top. I will be treating my new cloth top next year and I always use 303 on my vinyl.

So when you guys are saying you use 303, do you mean the 303 protectant or the 303 fabric guard?

On a vinyl top, I never (over 50 years) used anything other than the same 'cleaner' as used for the rest of the car (out of the same bucket); basically soap and water. A scrub brush for stubborn areas. No chemicals required.

I did wash the top first; working high to low. The rinse water flows from the 'high' just cleaned sections and then over the 'dirty' sections of the body.

Because tree sap is a beach (on the vinyl and the paint), I don't park under trees.

Bill,
I am leaning towards buying a newer (2019 or so) Mustang GT convertible in the spring. So April- June. I assume those tops are fabric. Ive owned one convertible which was a 65 Impala SS. So i imagine the tops today may be different.
Just in case anyone is wondering. Will not be getting rid of my 69 SS. That will never happen. Just adding to the stable.

The Mustang convertible offer the cloth top as an option otherwise they are vinyl. At least they used to a couple years back. We have a 2015 50 Year Package GT (just the option package not the serialized car) and it's a very nice car. Ruby red. My 2014 Gt500 fit me a little better with a taller roofline but it still has plenty of room. You are looking at 12 second car factory stock so they can move and with the premium package very comfortable. Get the optional premium package, little $ used and well worth every penny even when new. Enjoy
