My Chevelle now has a Hurst Comp Plus shifter and handle. It originally had a Muncie shifter which is long gone. It currently sports a off-white shifter knob with black inlaid lettering. This color and type of knob known to be incorrect (as far as I have determined from this board and other documentation) for a 1970 Chevelle with console.

I have searched TC to no avail regarding the correct shift knob other than it should be chrome for a console equipped car. I have only found chrome knobs for sale by various parts houses made for the Muncie shift handle, not the Hurst shift handle which has different size threads, either fine or course. Where can I locate a chrome knob for my Hurst shift handle? I now understand there are 5/16" threads for Muncie and 3/8" threads for Hurst. I recently bought a chrome shift ball from Modern Chevrolet, however I believe it is for the original Muncie shifter which is too small and does not fit. I need a 3/8" for the Hurst... Any ideas?? Thanks!!

How about drilling retapping the ball to 3/8. or you could try a heli coil thread repair, its mainly used to repair a thread but you could get away with using it as a bushing. Alan

Thanks for the response guys; I appreciate it. Shift ball could either be retapped to the larger 3/8" or I could return the ball and get one from GU.

I discussed the situation with Classic Muscle, a division of Modern Chevrolet (oldmusclecars.com). I purchased part number 3922525 which is the chrome ball for a 1970 Chevelle 4-spd Muncie transmission with console for an original Muncie shifter. Well, my original Muncie shifter apparently bit the dust years ago (as I have heard they were weak and didn't stand the test of time) and since replaced with a brand new out of the box Hurst shifter. Modern Chevrolet rep informed me that I could use part number 3955766 which is for a 1969 Camaro originally factory equipped with a Hurst shifter. It is all chrome with 3/8" thread which will work in place of the Muncie 3922525 shifter ball which is 5/16" thread.

I also checked GU and they have a chrome shift ball which is apparently correct for a 1970 Chevelle w/console. A bit more expensive than the Modern Chevrolet recommended part number 3955766.

Now all we need do is confirm or deny Bill Rose's comment regarding all chrome not being correct for a 70 Chevelle, about a two piece, chrome bottom/black top ball being the proper shift ball. Looking for a consensus on this before I send part back and get the recommended replacement part. Who is knowledgeable about what shift ball is correct for a 1970 Chevelle w/console (and possibly also for a non-console equipped car as well just to gain a further understanding of the types of shift balls used in all years of Chevelles).

I believe I am correct but have also learned nothing is definitive in this hobby.

A "search" may help confirm my belief.

Try: "Correct Shift Ball 1970 Console"

Solid Chrome Ball on console cars because the shift pattern is on the console.

Non Console cars received 1/2 Black with shift pattern on knob because no console, hence no shift pattern and needed on the ball.

That's the reason for (2) different shift balls in 1970.

Coaxing me out on a limb here? :)

There's definately a difference in the shifter itself with extra curve to accomidate the bench, But I'm "unaware" of a shift ball difference other than console/non-console.

All of the 2 piece balls I have seen (chrome bottom/black top) have had the shift pattern on them. This would not be correct for a console car as the console is where the shift pattern is displayed.

I believe the correct ball for 69 70 w/console is the plain chrome ball.

Not to confuse things more, but these two pictures I found (70 w/console) both show a white ball with the shift pattern on them.
