Just a few questions. My first child (son) is coming next month and I was wondering how soon do you cruise. My chevelle has no A/C so Im worried about the sun and wind. I bought a infant carrier that has a sun shield on it but that dont help the loud exhaust. I dont want to make him go deaf. My sister (the safety nazi) got so mad when I talked about riding him in the (death trap of a car). It is no worst the riding a child on a bike. I was going to paint the child seat base red to match my car but was afraid the paint would weaking the plastic. I am excited and terrified at the same time. So I guess my big question is this...How old did you start riding you children in you car with the windows and top down?
Thanks, John

First off congradulations to you and the Mom, as a kid I loved convertables and the wind, noise, I grew up around race cars. If it's too loud I would play a little farther from the garage.

I would say you need to make sure the car seat is securly fastened and go for a ride. None of us parents are going to put our kids in danger, so just wait and you will find your own comfort level.

I would say the sun would be worse than wind and noise. I hope your not running anything super loud, but typically if you are running decent exhaust with tail pipes it's no louder than a vacuum cleaner running in a smaller room.

Congrats! I thought I was the only one to take a picture of my pregnant wife with my Chevelle!
I took my daughter for one ride last year, before it got too cold, now that she is 8 months old she will be doing a lot more cruising. She likes the noise a lot, she used to bounce around like crazy inside my wife's stomach when we were cruising. The heat of the summer would make me nervous, esp if you get stuck in traffic or something. I had my wife drive separate and meet me at a couple shows last summer just so she could travel in AC and take her home when she wanted.

Congrats John! You could move up here and then you would only have to worry about wind and cold!

We took both kids out with the top down as infants, probably at about 6 months. The oldest she loved it and the youngest she still doesn't like that car, but then being a skinny bag of bones she is always cold even on a 95 degree day. Throw a blanket over the car seat to keep some of the wind and sun off and go cruise.

congrats on the baby on the way!

I have a 14 month old and a 2 month old. Way I figure it is if you can get car seat installed correctly in the Chevelle, you're good to go. The exhaust on my Chevelle is too loud, and with no money to modify it, I haven't gotten the green light from the wife. I'm dying to take the older baby for a ride though.

If the weather is mild, and your exhaust isn't too loud (or comes into the cabin while idling) you'll be ok. Can you put the top up? That would help with sun/wind, etc. These were family cars back in the day, although, generally not accepted as such these days. People used to hold their kid on their laps :) .

Do what you and your wife think is right. Just make sure the car seat is installed correctly.

My youngest was 9yrs old when I brought home the chevelle, so I can't speak to your question, but I can say that its been great cruising with him these years. He's 16 now and still by far, my favorite person to go out with in the car.
So heres to your future cruise partner :hurray:

My little ones LOVE riding. They're 11 and 6 now, but are ALWAYS up for a ride.

Make sure you can secure that baby seat nice and tight. They're designed for use with modern seat belts, so you may have to do some modifying to get it in there right.

He's your son, he is going to LOVE riding with daddy.

Congrats to you and your wife, by the way, and that is a VERY nice 'vert you have, man.

That's why God gave us skin.

but that dont help the loud exhaust. I dont want to make him go deaf.
If it's too loud for the kid, it's too loud for you and everyone else, also. The only reason it seems that kids have more sensitive ears is that you (and I) have ALREADY got hearing damage.

Bring the kid home from the hospital in the convert. Good story to tell him later on.

kids survived without AC in the past, they can survive without it now.
lock the car seat as tightly as you can in the middle of the rear seat, rig up the sun shade, and cruise.

My daughter was about 5 mos old when she rode in my 71 Monte hot rod. Had her backwards in her carrier seat in the front (yeah, I know, but the belts in back weren't long enough), watched me and held my hand for about the first 15 minutes, then was lulled to sleep by the motor/road noise. She's now 15 mos and has ridden (in an approved child seat) in my GMC van and in our 71 Stang convertible. As of right now she really enjoys going places in the cars. And she really loves going with Daddy when he moves the cars around in the driveway.

Most of us are the product of rides in (by todays standards) sub par safety seats in sub par safety cars and we all survived. Make sure the child seat is safely and correctly installed, the child is correctly strapped into the seat, and that you drive like a cautious parent (like your parents did with you) and all should be well.

That's for sure.
I grew up in South Carolina and I was around 16 before my parents got their first car with AC (and we never had it in our home, or in school).

I chuckle when people get paranoid about child safety in a car, yet the same people won't think twice about putting a little one in one of those little carts behind their bikes and go driving down the road with never a care. Just use common sense and you will do fine. For the paranoid, they had best just stay home in a padded room. ;)
