Can anyone tell me if a 1970 Chevy 12 bolt posi rear end will fit a 1966 Impala? Is there any Impala site like this one? If so I have not found it!

Jnny,

I believe the 70 to 66 swap is a bolt in. Just double check the backing plate to backing plate measurement.

Although this site is second to NONE when it comes to Chevelles and all things mechanical, there are a couple of Impala sites. Check out;

Chris, I think you mis-interpreted the question, just as I did the first time I read it. I think they are asking if a 70 Impala rear will swap to a 66 Impala. I don't know the answer, but I think that's the question.

Could be my mistake Chris/Mike, I simply assumed he/she was asking about Impala rears.

Jnny, just to be clear. If you are asking if a 70 IMPALA rear will bolt into a 66 IMPALA then the answer is, without a shadow of a doubt, I think so.

If you were asking if a 70 CHEVELLE rear will go into a 66 IMPALA then the answer is, without a shadow of a doubt, no.

d1_b,

Are you saying a 1970 Impala housing will NOT bolt into a 1966 Impala?

Enlighten me! What are the differences between a 1970 Impala rear end housing and a 1966 housing?

65-70 12 Bolt Full Size all interchange. To the best of my knowledge they are all the same.

my bad. 70 12 bolt posi CHEVELLE rear(drum to drum). Did the impala's have a wider wheel base?

Even if they are the same width, the suspension is different so the mounting brackets will not line up. As I said before the impala's use a pan hard bar, chevelles do not.

I have a '71 chevelle, my brother has a '66 impala, I have compared them before and they are not interchangeable.

My car has no panhard bar. Strictly angled control arms on the 1970 Impala.
