Maybe someone can help me. I am a current owner of a 1967 Chevelle SS - (original 396 car) now with a (in question) 427 NOM
installed. The car is a true SS, however, the motor is where my trouble is.
The car has been fully restored with a complete rebuild on the "427".
However, I don't know much about the motor at all. And the more I try to
find out, the more questions I have.

I was told when I purchased the car that the engine was a 1969 427 out of an
Impala w/rec. port heads. Okay - but when I pulled off the aluminum GM
hi-rise manifold I discovered that the manifold was for rec. port heads and
that the "427" had oval port heads.

Next, I started getting the block numbers (something I guess I should of
done in the first place), and this is what I found out:

VIN# 138177A110553 (at least I know that it's a 1381 car)

Here's where it gets interesting:
Engine ID = 1237971 T0323LC
(which matches to a 1969 427/390 Impala motor w/auto tranny)
Casting # 3855961
(which checks to be a 1966-67 396/325 or 360 2-bolt motor)

It doesn't seem to match.

Any help in determine what's going on here would be truly appreciated!

Mark, are you sure the engine number isn't 'IC' which is a 1965 passenger 396/325 manual trans instead of 'LC'. Look in the back of the crank for a bushing noting that it would point to a manual installation if the bushing were still there.

Unless someone changed it over, it would also have a canister oil filter which was not used in 1969.

Shouldn't there be a date cast into the block? On the drivers side of the block, between two of the freeze plugs? If you've got 323 on the engine ID, which is March 23, then I'm going to guess the cast date on the block in going to be several weeks earlier, maybe even a month or two. The oil filter canister, like Rick said, is a good indicator of what year it might be.

Mark, you might want to copy this over to the Tag Team forum. Or maybe one of the moderators can move it.

Probably excitement on your part but the 4th character in your "1381 car" is actually half of "17" denoting a hardtop/coupe...real SS's are usually referred to as "138" cars since there are "17" hardtops/coupes and "67" convertibles in 67.

Looking at Mortec the casing lists there for a 65/66 396 and a 66 427 (suspicious, may be a typo and meant to show as 67 427). Oval port heads would be correct for a 427/390. Intake port configuration should be oval (if correct) but rectangular will work. I wonder if after "rebuilding" the engine, the numbers weren't restamped in the pad and the *wrong* set was restamped on that block?

I'd try to locate the former owner and ask him more about the car - especially the things you're finding that appear to be something else. I wouldn't fall for the "...that's what I was told..." routine either. It's what he told you to make the sale that matters.

the last two numbers "71" i think means that the engine was built in 1971. but i am not a hundred percent sure!
