I'm not sure why you are seeing the Malibu trim level going for less than the Chevelle (plain trim level). The Malibu trim was a step up from the plain Chevelle 300. Could be condition or that the Malibus you are seeing are really just dressed up plain Chevelle 300 (clone, although I don't think anyone considers cloning a Malibu as much of a problem as cloning an SS.)
If you have a Malibu you should be proud of your Chevelle Malibu.

They are all Chevelles just with 3 different trim options. Base 300, Malibu or SS396.

It means it is not a VIN tag, its a body ("trim" "cowl") tag

I think the confusion comes from Chevy changing from "Malibu" being a trim level on the Chevelle, to the "Malibu" being a separate model in the 80's. For me, it confused me when it happened because I thought they just forgot to put "Chevelle" lettering on the cars.
Chevy did the same thing with the Chevy II with the "Nova trim package" to the "Nova" car model.

I blame the Chevrolet Marketing Dept.

The Chevelle is a car line in the Chevrolet family. The Malibu is a series of Chevelle, hence all Malibus are Chevelles. The SS396 option could be ordered on two series of Chevelles in 1969, the Malibu and 300 Deluxe (there was no 300 series in 1969 unless one counts the Nomad wagon. The SS396 option was possible with the Malibu sport coupe, convertible, or El Camino along with the 300 Deluxe 300 coupe (13427) and Chevelle 300 sport coupe.

Hi, I am about to buy a 69 SS tribute Chevelle. Owner doesn’t know much. I’m trying to decide if it’s a Chevelle or Malibu. The body tag is below. The paint, trim etc makes sense, just not sure about the 13637 out of Fremont? Any help would be appreciated! I’ve read some decoding websites and it doesn’t seem clear. Thanks
